How does a thermal-magnetic circuit breaker work?
A thermal-magnetic breaker like this one incorporates a bimetallic strip that expands at different rates when heated. In the event of an overload, the increase in current flowing through the strip heats it and causes it to bend. This gives you both instantaneous and time-delayed protection, allowing for inrush currents such as those needed to start motors, but responding immediately to short circuits.
