What Types of Light Fittings are Available?

Light fittings are the hardware that connects a light bulb to an electrical supply. They come in a wide range of styles, sizes, and materials. The most common types of light fittings are:

    • Smart lights - Latest trend in home decorating. These lights have sensors that detect movement in the room, so they can turn on automatically when someone enters and off when they leave.

    • Machine inspection lights - Used in factories to illuminate work areas, machinery, and equipment

    • Downlights/Downlighters - Used indoors to provide general lighting, they can be recessed into ceilings or walls.

    • Low and High Bay - Light fittings that are used indoors for large areas such as warehouses, factories, and other industrial facilities.

    • Batten lights - Used outdoors for floodlighting large areas such as parking lots, sports fields, or airport runways.

    • Floodlights - Used outdoors for floodlighting specific areas such as buildings and monuments

    • Emergency lighting - Used indoors for emergency exit signs and exit routes in case of fire or other emergencies.

    • Hazardous area lights - Used indoors or outdoors in hazardous areas where flammable gases may be present (e.g., steel mills)

Downlighters are the most common type of luminaire used in downlights, providing illumination directly downwards. They are ideal for use in kitchens and bathrooms due to the direct lighting and are available in various sizes and styles.

The light source for these luminaires can be either a fluorescent tube or an LED strip. Fluorescent tubes are more energy efficient than LEDs (although they have a shorter lifespan). However, LEDs produce more light than fluorescents, so you may not need as many downlighters you use LED lights instead of fluorescents.

Downlights are typically used in luminaire lighting applications where it is desirable to direct light down onto the floor or area.
