    Push Button Switches

Push button switches also known as push switches are one of the most common types of electrical switches used in the market today. These versatile components are used in a wide range of applications, from everyday household appliances to industrial machinery.

With their straightforward operation and robust construction, push buttons are a popular choice for controlling electrical devices, activating alarms, and initiating various control sequences.

Here at RS, we offer a comprehensive selection of high-quality momentary, on and off, electrical, latching push button switches in a range of shapes, sizes, and colours. If you are designing a new project or simply maintaining an existing installation, we are confident we have the right push button switch for you.

How Do Push Button Switches Work?

A push button has two main components, the button itself and the internal switching mechanism. When pushing the button, it forces the plunger to move, which in turn engages or disengages the internal contacts, thereby completing or breaking the electrical circuit.

    Types of Push Button Switches

Push button switches come in a variety of types, each with unique characteristics and features. Some of the most common types are:

    Momentary Push Button Switch

Momentary push buttons also known as spring return buttons are a type of switch that requires continuous compression. They will turn on when the user applies a force (usually your finger) to the switch button and will only stay on while the switch button is compressed. Once the force is removed momentary switches will spring back and return to their original off position.

Momentary switches will ALWAYS have brackets around the momentary position to help with identification. For example (On)-Off-(On), On-(Off)

    Latching Push Button Switch

Latching push buttons, also known as maintained or stay-put push buttons are a type of switch that does not require continuous compression. They will turn on when the user applies a force (usually your finger) to the switch button and will remain in the on position. It is only until the user compresses the switch button again that the switch will un-latch and return to its original off position.

    Illuminated Push Button Switch

Illuminated push buttons incorporate a light source, typically an LED, that lights up when the button is pressed. illuminated switches are often used in low-light or dark environments and are ideal for applications where a visual indication of the switch's status is required.

How to Choose Push Button Switches

When selecting push button switches, it's important to consider several factors to ensure they meet your specific needs. Here are some key aspects to keep in mind:

    Duration & Circuit Flow

Momentary switches only stay closed as long as the button is pressed, ideal for applications like doorbells. Conversely, latching push button switches remain closed even after the button is released, requiring another push to open the circuit, perfect for power switches. Your application will determine the type of push button switch you need.

    Shape

Push button switches come in various shapes, including round, square, and rectangular. Your choice depends on the application and aesthetic preferences.

    Colour & Illumination

Colour can indicate the function of the push button switch. For example, red often denotes stop or emergency. Illuminated push button switches provide visual feedback about the switch's status, which is useful in low-light conditions or for indicating power states.

    Installation method

Panel-mount push button switches are installed through a hole in a panel, providing a secure and flush fit. Alternatively, PCB on and off push buttons can be soldered directly onto a printed circuit board, ideal for space-saving compact designs.

    Safety features

Consider the environment and the type of push button switch you’ll need. Emergency stop push button switches are designed for quick and easy access to stop machinery in hazardous situations. Waterproof push button switches are essential in environments where moisture or liquids are present to ensure the switch works as intended when an emergency arises.

    Certifications

Look for push button electrical switches that comply with relevant safety and industry standards, such as UL, CE, or RoHS.

Industrial Applications of Push Button Switches

Push button switches are versatile components used in a wide range of industries, including:

    Consumer Electronics

Push on and off switches are used in various consumer electronics, like remote controls, cameras, and gaming consoles. Wireless push button switches offer convenient control for smart home devices like lights and appliances.

    Industrial Control

Push button switches are essential in industrial control panels for operating machinery, starting and stopping processes, and controlling automation systems.

    Telecommunication

Push button switches are used in telecommunication equipment, such as telephones and intercom systems, providing tactile feedback for user input.

    Medical

Push button switches like momentary or latching switches are found in medical devices like hospital beds or wheelchairs where fine control and adjustments may be necessary. At the same time, multi push button switches may be used for patient monitoring systems to toggle between multiple metrics.

    Automotive

Push button switches control various functions within vehicles, including power windows, door locks, and entertainment systems. The automotive industry frequently uses 12v push button on off switches for their power needs.

    Building Management System

On and off push buttons are frequently used in buildings to control lighting, HVAC systems, and security systems, offering centralised control and automation.

    Retail and Hospitality

Push button switches are used in point-of-sale systems, self-service kiosks, and hotel room controls, enhancing user experience and streamlining operations.

    Home Automation

Push button switches can be integrated into smart home systems to control lighting, appliances, and security systems. 30mm push button switches are commonly used in home automation due to their compact size, while multi push button switches can control multiple functions with a single device.
