    Power Cable

Power cables are a group of cables used for the distribution of electrical power. Cables are typically made up of one or more individually insulated conductors enclosed in an overall outer sheath. Power cables are used in a wide range of applications including mains wiring, lighting, sockets and connecting to electrical appliances. Power cables can be found in industrial, commercial and domestic wiring.

RS Components offer an extensive range of high-quality electrical mains and power cables from industry-leading brands including Belden, Lapp, Prysmian, Alpha Wire and of course RS PRO.

What are the different types of power cable?

    Mains power cable

Available with solid or stranded conductors with a varying number of cores, voltage and current ratings as well as various sheathing materials, choosing the correct cable is vital to ensuring a safe installation. Twin and earth are some of the most commonly used cord found in both residential and commercial applications and comes in a range of ratings.

    Uses

    • Industrial and commercial installations
    • Power leads, cable reels and extension leads with IEC connectors such as C13, C14, C7 or BS1363
    • Appliances, power supplies

    Armoured cable

Steel wire armoured cable (SWA) is a highly reinforced power cable. It will supply a continuous flow of electricity to the intended target, due to the galvanized steel overlapping the centre cable. Each cable is built up of numerous copper cores, followed by XLPE insulation of the cores. The insulated cores are then protected by a layer of PVC bedding, which is secured by steel wire. Outer sheathing can be PVC or LSZH.

    Coiled cable

Coiled cables are designed to extend to a length that is far beyond their at-rest length, and due to this advantage, they are often used when high mobility is a concern, such as in old-style wall mounted telephones. However, coil cables still have modern uses, such as in headphones, and can be used whenever a user wishes to avoid the inconvenience of wrapping up a long cable after use.

    Lighting cable

Lighting electrical cable has many domestic, commercial and industrial uses. These cables can be used to wire electricity to ceiling lights or to control lighting in appliances with light fixtures such as microwave lamps or oven lights.
