    Belt Pulleys

RS stock two main types of belt pulleys, timing belt pulleys and wedge & vee belt pulleys.

    Timing Belt Pulleys

Timing belt pulleys are grooved wheels that are part of the timing belt system. They are used to maximise power transmission through your machinery. Common applications include vehicles, printers and manufacturing equipment.

How do timing belt pulleys work?

Timing belt pulleys have either teeth or pockets around the outside diameter. The timing teeth engage holes in the timing belt, while timing pockets engage drive lugs (fasteners) on a belt's inner circumference. Both cause frictional forces between the flat belt and the pulley surface. This not only enables the driving motion of the system but helps to avoid speed variations and slippage, meaning you can more easily maintain and control the speed of your machine.

Timing belt pulleys come in a range of materials including aluminium, steel and iron. This design makes them strong, heat resistant and durable, and also ensures a noiseless output.

    Wedge & Vee Belt Pulleys

A Vee belt pulley is a wheel mechanism that transfers power between the shaft and a Vee belt. Vee belts pulleys contain a V-shaped grove for the belt to sit in, this provides traction and avoids slipping belts.

Where might I use a Wedge/ Vee Belt Pulley?

Vee belt pulleys are typically used in the industrial and automotive sectors, as they offer advantages when compared to other methods of transmission. The pulley is quiet when operating and is economical and simple to replace, as well as providing an effective grip.
