Manual Radiator Valve.
Manual radiator valves have no thermostatic control. The radiator temperature is controlled through the thermostat on your central heating system and the manual valve is only used to turn the radiator on and off.
Thermostatic Radiator Valve
Also known as TRV’s control the amount of water entering the radiator. The main difference between TRV’s and manual valves is TRV’s are able to self-regulate. They sense the room temperature and ensure the radiator works towards a maximum room temperature. The radiator maintains your desired temperature. This ensures maximum levels of efficiency are adhered to in the process helping you to save money on your heating bills.
Lockshield Valve
These valves are used to control the amount of water flowing out of the radiator to the return pipework. This allows for the “balancing” of the radiator. This means that the water is distributed evenly across your property and heat the radiators at the same time.
Angled or Straight Valves?
An angled radiator valve allows you to join the central heating pipework to a radiator at an angle. The radiator valve has a 90° bend in it so the valve inlet can be met in either a horizontal or vertical way.
A straight radiator valve joins the radiator to the central heating pipework in a straight horizontal line.
The type of valve you need will depend on the position of the valve inlets that your radiator requires and also on the position of the central heating supply flow and return pipes that your radiator feeds off.

Radiator Valve Inlet Positions
Locate the valve inlets on your radiators is an easy enough process. Standard radiators usually have side valve inlets. They can be located at the bottom of the radiator and tend to allow access from the side only. It is likely you would need to use an angled valve to join the pipework to the inlet valve.
A straight valve could be used if your radiator has the inlet valves at the back and your pipework comes through the floor.
If you have a towel rail radiator the valve tends to be at the bottom. If the central heating pipes come through the wall you would use an angled valve to be able to join the horizontal pipework to the valve inlet at the bottom of the radiator.
